In Summer 2011 ARK opened an Animal Rescue and Adoption Centre in Argostoli.  The land was donated by the Municipality following the introduction of a new law which directed all stray dogs be removed from tourist areas (like Argostoli).  After that, however, the materials, construction and labour to make it happen all came from donations and volunteers. ARK's aim is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome Kefalonia's stray animal population. Hundreds of dogs have been rehomed since they opened their doors but there are still over 300 dogs and 40+ cats there at any one time. Working in tandem with KATs wherever possible to fundraise and help neuter the animals it's another step forward in giving the strays a chance and educating the local population along the way.  But finding places for the rehabilitated dogs to go is a constant battle.
